Tourism days in Rangiroa
From September 22 to 27, the Ohotu public beach in Rangiroa will host the “Farerei Haga” festival. This 4th edition of the event is a great celebration for the islands organized by the Tourism committee of Rangiroa. This event has experienced increasing popularity with participation numbering more each year.
Rangiroa is an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago well-known for its wild vegetation and its incredible underwater beauty. The island is visited by numerous divers that come to discover its huge concentration of tropical fish and to dive in its famous Tiputa pass, a well-known playground for dolphins and other big fish. With its Maohi culture is strong and everpresent, the “Farerei Haga” week is a great opportunity to celebrate their culture through various traditional activities.
For this year, the program is full of a wide variety of activities. Va’a races (Polynesian outrigger canoe), a traditional song and dance contest, Polynésian sporting events – a stone lifting competition, fruit carrying races, Tamure marathon (Tahitian dance), big game fishing and coconut tree climbing contest will be part of the event. Spectators encounter Paumotu people (people living in Tuamotu island) who are always happy to share their culture with foreigners. The event is an opportunity for you to contemplate the agility of athletes, the grace of dancers and the creativity of Polynesian artisans.
This year, the song and dance contest is placed under the theme of « water ». It is a large subject that opens numerous possibilities for the dancing troupes. An award will be given for all contests’ winners. For instance, the best dancing team will win a prize of 400 000 pacific francs and the best choir will obtain 50 000 pacific francs. Sportsmen and craftsmen will be awarded during the event too.
These days of tourism are perfect moments to meet and exchange with Polynesian people. The “Farerei Haga” event follows numerous touristic and cultural objectives. The event will also allow visitors to confront with the reality of French Polynesia; appreciate its isolation.
At the end of the week, public could take part of a large get-together; a great way to unite people coming from distant horizons around the common pleasure of dancing.
