Tahiti & the movie industry

Eventhough Polynesia offers incredible landscapes and the myth of South seas still remains, only a few movies have been produced in the area.

1930 – Tabu by Friedrich Munrau & Robert Flaherty

Considered as one of the last masterpieces of the silent cinema, this movie tells the story of a young man in love with a young woman that had been chosen by the priest to be the sacred virgin. Because they violated the taboo, their union ended tragically.

1935 – Mutiny of the Bounty by Franck Loyd
Starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable

Today a well-know classic of the movie industry, it recounts -with a lot of freedom- the story of the famous mutineers.

1962 – Mutiny of the Bounty by Lewis Milestone
Starring Trevor Howard and Marlon Brando

This huge production is a remake of the 1935 version and was partly shot in Moorea. Once the movie was over, Marlon Brando decided to rent the atoll of Tetiaroa and he is still the tenant today.

1983 – The Bounty by Roger Donaldson
Starring Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson

Very different from the two previous versions, this adventure movie shows a Captain Blight not as cruel as the legend and tells a different story from the ones of Nordhoff and Hall.

2000 – Le Prince du Pacifique by Alain Corneau
Starring Thierry Lhermitte, Patrick Timsit, Marie Trintignant…

French movie produced in 2000 at Huahine, it recounts with beautiful pictures and scenes the romantic story of two French adventurers in 1918.

2010 – Couples retreat by Peter Billingsley
Starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Jean Reno…

This American comedy has been produced in 2010 at Bora bora. It deals with the efficiency of couple retreats. The story takes place in a luxurous hotel with a magnificent setting.

2011 – L’ordre et la morale by Mathieu Kassovitz
Starring Mathieu Kassovitz, Philippe Torreton, Labe Lapacas, Sylvie Testud…

The movie produced in November 2011 in the island of Anaa in French Polynesia recounts the tragedy of Ouvea in New Caledonia where 27 French policeman have been taken hostages in 1988.
