Papeete, the street art soul

For a long time, the Polynesian capital has been seeking a soul, this subtle identity that emerges over the city streets, its buildings and its inhabitants … This was not easy, as the construction of Papeete had to face difficult challenges in combination. Observing from plane during our landing in Tahiti, we quickly understand that we had to push mountains a little bit in order to make a place for the main Polynesian city in this small strip of land along the beautiful lagoon of Tahiti. Around its vast commercial port, its shopping streets, its historic market, its offices, its terraces and the homes of the many city dwellers bringing it to live form a patchwork that will surprise the traveler in search of exoticism. How to make the connection? Throughout its editions, the international festival of street art Ono’u, has brought an appealing response by giving carte blanche to the largest international street graphic designers.

Ono’u, the color to forge a bond

From street to street, wall to wall, it is another Papeete which is revealed along with the inspirations of the invited Tahitian and international artists. If the festival is an event that attracts a large crowd for a whole week, at the beginning of October, it is all the year that residents and visitors benefit from this permanent exhibition and outside the walls, of which Papeete has become the canvas. From year to year, the city is enriched with new frescoes that gradually invade all its neighborhoods, reflecting a quoted patchwork that finds its most beautiful expression.

In Tahitian, Ono’u is the result of the fusion of “ono”, to make the connection and of “u”, the color. A whole program, which we invite you to discover during your next visit!

The Ono’u Festival

Every year, dozens of local and world artists gather for a week in the whole city of Papeete, Tahiti, and now in Uturoa, on the island of Raiatea. With many introductory workshops open to the public, sound and light mapping entertainments that animate the most beautiful graffiti, performances at the museum of street art in Tahiti …

Only one hour by plane from Tahiti, the second largest atoll in the world stretches as far as your eyes could see up to 117 kilometers in circumference composing a chain of 240 ‘islets. It goes without saying, Rangiroa is one of the most beautiful Polynesian postcards.

Rangiroa –  a picturesque stopover

Like its enormous size, the beauty of Rangiroa’s lagoon seems infinite. Difficult to resist falling in love with this atoll as big as Tahiti and where one imagines being Robinson of Tuamotu.

Absolute delight is all around

Among all the atolls, Rangiroa can pride to evolve the expectations of divers as well as landlubbers (that is not always the case). Under the water the Avatoru and Tiputa passes offer a fabulous dive experience. Sharks and dolphins are playing in the same area, sometimes even – with the divers. It is really magic! Elsewhere, manta rays and huge napoleon make a performance on one of the richest Polynesian coral reef.

On the water, explore Blue Lagoon  during a day, a veritable lagoon in the lagoon where baby blacktip sharks and Kaveu, enormous coconut crabs, are growing.

Do you know that you could also walk through the vine rows planted in the same coral, – a famous vineyard of Dominique Auroy, afterwards enjoy its nectar with your feet in the water? Do not miss the visit of the Peral farm, you will be surprised by the skills and secrets that pinctada margaritifera, a famous Polynesian black lipped oyster keeps.

As you can see, Rangiroa is not only a boat ride in its lagoon … it also has a very nice accommodation capacity. Alongside with magnificent Kia Ora, there are some nice guesthouses with warmest hospitality and all necessary comfort. One of them is a guest house ‘Bounty’ of Muriel and Alain, situated beside the Tiputa pass. Their 4 fully equipped studios placed just a few steps from a lagoon in a serene and relaxed atmosphere are waiting for you… Just couple of minutes away by bike provided by the guest house and you arrive at your dive center or at one of the beach cafes for a lunch with your feet in the water. Rangiroa-simply enjoy it…

The event of the month, At the end of November, Le Meridien Tahiti will receive the sixth edition of “Ori Tahiti’, a great competition celebrating a traditional Tahitian dancing in its cradle, but far beyond the borders.

Are you coming to French Polynesia soon? Do not leave before attending the performance of Ori Tahiti, the most authentic and probably the most beautiful of all the Polynesian traditional dances.

The big Ori Mass organized at the Meridian Tahiti Hotel at the end of November will be a perfect opportunity to discover this mainstay of the Fenua’s culture, sublimated by the best local and international dancers.

More than a dance

The Ori Tahiti is more than a dance, it is a real art. Traditional percussions, vegetal costumes, choreographies and songs imitating Polynesian ancestral myths join to embody the most authentic representations of the Polynesian culture

A whole body echoes the murmurs of the Polynesian gods, narrating about love and nature in the most beautiful way. The themes and aesthetics of this art are so close to universal, that Ori Tahiti continues to spread throughout the world. The Dancing Schools flourish from Asia to Europe and the “tamure” is gathering more and more followers … Like the Polynesians themselves, who returned to this ancient art, for years banned by missionaries.

On 25 and 26 November 2017, the Ori Tahiti Nui competition, which will end with the Ori Tahiti international championship (Tane and Vahine categories), will bring to life, the most beautiful that Polynesian art owns. And the most emotional …

There is a place where the rain isn’t a sign a sorrow, it is actually a much more noble indicator: the season of abundance. You need to know that French Polynesia has been a self-sufficient place for centuries and natural resources were simply vital, mostly because of its remote location. This is the reason we like to think of the raining season as the Polynesian Spring. Referring to the Polynesian ancestors calendar, local people like to pay attention to every details and changes brought by nature. Before the rain starts its season, we know that the Uru, local bread fruit will be ready to be placed on wood fire, and that the Faapu (vegetable garden) will produce enough crop until next dearth season “Mata’ari’I I raro”. These signs are also written in the stars of the Polynesian sky.

The Pleiades, a constallation that rules the dry and wet

Captain Cook chose to take onboard his vessel, Tupai, local male from the Island of Raiatea, for its knowledge in traditional sailing and star reading. In fact, Polynesian people have trust the skies for centuries, to guide them between the islands.

Traditionally, the seven stars of the Pleiades, called “Matari’i” show when it is time to enter the Polynesian season of abundance, “Te Auhune”.

Around November 20th, the local people refer to the same stars when the time for spring season comes around, and the celebration is on all over the islands! In the Tuamotu, people will celebrate the Turtles as a sign of prosperity and fertility. Whereas in the Marquises, people will honor the bread fruit or ko’ina tapavau. The Pleiades are celebrated all the way to Hawaii, where the constellation’s appearance are considered as the most sacred day of the year. The entire South Pacific glorifies the event, as this is the most fertile period of the Polynesian Calendar.

Can you imagine, this period of the year is seen as the low season for most travel agencies! You know now, this isn’t the case for E-Tahiti Travel!
