International & domestic flights

Because of the large distances separating one island to the others, flying definitively constitutes one of the major means of transportations to reach Tahiti and then travel between each islands.

1. International flights

The only international airport is located in Tahiti in Faaa district, just 5 km away from downtown Papeete. It was built in the 60’ to support the economical and social changes that were occurred at that time. Today, Tahiti Faaa airport welcomes as much as 7 different airlines and is connected to the rest of the world through direct flights to the destinations listed below. The airport features 3 terminals : International Arrivals ; International Departures and Domestic flights (more details below).

Launched in 1998Air Tahiti Nui proposes international flights to Los Angeles (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Paris (France) and Auckland (New Zealand). In January 2009, 2 direct routes to Sydney and New York have been closed for economic reasons.

Using Airbus 340-300 aircrafts transporting up to 286 passengers in economy or business class, Air Tahiti Nui offers large and convenient schedules that allow you to arrive early in Tahiti and catch a connecting domestic flight to other islands.

 2. Domestic flights : Air Tahiti

Air Tahiti features flights to 40 different destinations (the latest one is Rarotonga available since several years). The most popular destinations like Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea or Rangiroa are connected to Tahiti with several daily flights. On the other hand, some islands like the Marquesas can be limited to one flight per week.

Air Tahiti manages a float of 12 modern aircrafts (1 Twin Otter; 1 Beechcraft; 3 ATR 42-500 and 7 ATR72-500) and flies to 40 islands in all 5 Polynesian archipelagos.

Remark :

1) If you wish to discover a minimum of 2 islands, Air Tahiti features 4 different flight passes (ask for “Air Pass”) which offer good discounts. Tickets are valid 28 days.
2) Luggage weight allowed: International travelers are allowed 20 kg of luggage.
